The cognitive test battery in BASE contains 14 tests measuring five intellectual abilities (perceptual speed, reasoning, memory, knowledge, fluency). At the 5th measurement point 8 out of the original 14 tests were included in the assessment.
Perceptual speed was measured by the following three
tests:
a) Digit Letter test (Lindenberger, Mayr, & Kliegl, 1993),
which is a substitution test akin to the Digit Symbol Substitution
subtest of the WAIS (Wechsler, 1982). In BASE, participants had to
name letters instead of writing symbols. Version I was used in the
intake assessment (EE), version II in the intensive protocol
(IP).
b) Digit Symbol Substitution (Wechsler, 1955).
c) A computerized 32-item version of the Identical Pictures test
from the ETS (Ekstrom, French, Harman, & Derman,
1976).
The test scores for (a), (b) and (c) correspond to the number of
correct answers.
For more detailed information about the procedures, see Lindenberger et al. (1993) or the "Intelligenz und Kognition" documentation at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development.
